Playing with scale

It’s almost Christmas here in London.

I love love love this time of year. Fairy lights all over the house, everything styled up to the max with giant baubles, the smell of eucalyptus, pine and oranges. There is something magical about this time of year.

I think interiors should be magical at all times throughout the year, not just at Christmas.

Through experience I have found that the easiest way to achieve a sense of drama and fantasy is to play with scale.

A giant club chair in a cottage, an oversized pendant in a bedroom, or a small picture in a large space. It’s so unexpected that it immediately becomes exciting. What could be easier.

Just look at the country cottage project featured in Living Etc a few years back – a giant Anglepoise looks amazingly dramatic in a cosy sitting room.

The white Panton chairs look all Alice in Wonderland in a country kitchen.

And my favorite, a giant white pendant as featured in Elle Decoration. As for the colours, soft pinks and greens, that could be a whole other post.
